Voatsiperifery takes its name from “Voa”, which means fruit and “Tsiperifery” which is the name of the plant in Malagasy. The fruit of a Piperaceae vine, Piper Borbonense, its botanical name, is a wild pepper that villagers in humid tropical forest areas harvest by hand. Its picking is difficult because the vine climbs the trees of the tropical forest up to 20 meters high and only bears fruit on the young shoots located on its ends. The wild nature of the plants explains the difference in maturity of its berries (green, black once dried). Its berries look very similar to cubebe pepper with smaller berries.
